Healthy chocolate pudding dirt cups are the perfect easy Halloween dessert. Extra creamy, vegan and dairy free, this super chocolate-y pudding is the best nostalgic treat.
The weather this past weekend had me thinking of Halloween and all Halloween desserts. As a kid, I always loved the chocolate pudding dirt cups. A simple chocolate pudding cup topped with crushed Oreos and of course gummy worms!
Little did I know, this dessert was probably the easiest dessert to ever put together. But also full of so much sugar. As a child, that didn’t matter to me {maybe to my parents, but not to me}.
Creamy cool pudding, crunchy crushed cookies and chewy “slimy” gummy worms were what Halloween desserts were made of.
But you all know me {at least most of you do by now} and I absolutely love to turn these nostalgic, not so healthy, desserts into a healthy option that’s undetectable by others.
Enter the healthy chocolate pudding dirt cups. First, I couldn’t stop eating the pudding, but when it was topped with crushed Oreos {used Oreo thins this time around}, it became even more addicting.
No chocolate pudding dirt cup is complete without gummy worms, so this was my sugary component. I ate one just for old time’s sake…started to wonder why I ever loved those so much. But I digress.
Secret ingredient in healthy chocolate pudding dirt cups
Typically, I would start this dessert out with some soft, caramel-like dates {like I did with this vegan chocolate pudding}. But I wanted to switch things up a bit this time.
While standing in the dried fruit aisle I spotted this canister of prunes. WAIT!! Don’t leave yet!!
Prunes get a bad rap. They’re just dried plums. So if you like regular plums, I promise you’ll like prunes. And actually prunes are delightfully sweet and full of so many health benefits. They’re high in fiber, potassium, iron and are low on the glycemic index. Making them super perfect for this healthy chocolate pudding.
How to make healthy chocolate pudding dirt cups
Now that we’ve gotten past the prunes {we have, haven’t we???}, it’s time to move on to how to actually make these healthy chocolate pudding dirt cups.
Starting with those wonderful prunes, we also add avocado: a healthy fat that will help make this pudding extra creamy. 2 scoops of your favorite chocolate protein powder {this one is my favorite!}.
Plus plenty of cashew milk {Silk brand is my absolute favorite} to help make this pudding extra creamy and not just a frosting.
I had to blend mine in two batches in my blender to make sure it ended up super creamy. But if you have an extra powerful blender, feel free to do this all in one batch.
Then just blend until smooth!
Necessary toppings for healthy chocolate pudding dirt cups
As I mentioned, you can’t have chocolate pudding dirt cups without a few specific toppings.
One being chocolate Oreos. I decided to go with the thins, which have become a new favorite of ours. Burken loves the lemon, which I used in this super delicious Raspberry Lemon Dip.
Just place them all in a large Ziploc bag and use a rolling pin to finely crush them. Use the crushed Oreos to top the chilled healthy chocolate pudding.
The last must are the gummy worms. Even if you’re not going to eat them, they do make for some pretty creepy critters crawling out of your pudding. So if you’re serving these for a Halloween party, you’ve gotta have those gummy worms!
