It’s finally starting to feel like summer here in the Midwest, so what better way to kick it off than with a tropical berry smoothie?

With 4th of July right around the corner {craziness, I know!}, I thought it would be fun to make this healthy smoothie into a patriotic treat.

The holidays can always bring lots of great food and time with friends and family. But sometimes the meal choices might not be the most nutritious.

You may be thinking to yourself it’s worth it to skip breakfast and save room for indulging treats later in the day. This honestly couldn’t be further from the truth though!

Eating a healthy breakfast will actually help you to eat less throughout the day, and will put you in a mindset to make nutritious choices while you’re out and about.

If you know me, you know that I’m all about mindful eating, and not limiting what you eat. However, it’s still important to make sure you’re getting nutritious foods in your body to keep it running in tip top condition.

This tropical berry smoothie is a great way to kick off your morning in a healthy way, and one you’ll likely take well past the fourth!

How to make a tropical berry smoothie

Layered berry smoothie

If you’re going for the layered look, like this smoothie pictured, you’re going to have to make sure you’re making it in the correct order.

Start with the blueberry layer, which consists of frozen blueberries and your favorite milk. {Mine is Silk unsweetened vanilla Cashew Milk}. You’ll have to rinse out your blender {I love using single serve ones like this one}.

raspberries, coconut milk, and blueberries

The next layer is a combination of canned coconut milk, frozen bananas for thickness and natural sweetness. Then add in your favorite vanilla protein powder {this is my ALL TIME fave}, and a few drops of coconut extract for that take me to the beach flavor.

At this point, if you would like the red to be really prominent, I highly suggest freezing your smoothie. This will allow for the raspberry layer to sit on top and make a really nice red, white and blue look.

Your final layer, as you may have already guessed, is raspberries! Simply blend raspberries and your favorite milk together. The pour on top of your blue and white smoothie.

On-the-go berry smoothie

Now, if you don’t really want to take the time to create this three layer berry smoothie, it’s totally fine by me to blend everything all together at once.

You may or may not need some additional liquid, so just keep an eye on that if your smoothie starts to get reaaalllll thick.

This makes for the perfect on-the-go smoothie, especially if you use one of those personal blenders where you can just blend and go.

I love this healthy tropical berry smoothie because it’s full of all natural sweetness from the frozen fruit, has a boost of protein from your protein powder, and some healthy fat from the coconut milk.

No matter the way you enjoy this smoothie, I’m sure you’ll be taken to a beach, with a light breeze and palm trees swaying after one sip. Just don’t open your eyes for awhile, as to be instantly transported back to your desk.

Hope you have an excellent Fourth of July, and I’ll see you next week!
